AN2.4.2 Environmental (water) Allocation
There is an important distinction between ecological requirements for surface or groundwater ecosystems and the agreed allocation to meet environmental requirements. The environmental water requirement (EWR) is the outcome of the allocation process where water needs to support ecosystems and other environmental functions are weighed against the current and planned needs for human use. Providing for environmental flows requires identifying the key river assets (e.g. important species or pollution dilution function). The key flow requirements for the assets should then be determined, followed by options for achieving the required flows. Finally, monitoring requirements should be set to check on the effectiveness of the flows provided.
