AN6.1.1 Role of WUAs in Water Saving in Groundwater Irrigation Systems

The guidance provided in this document outlines the ways in which Water User Associations (WUAs) can assist in the introduction of water savings measures for agricultural areas fed primarily by groundwater. Agriculture typically accounts for 80% of water abstractions, so measures to save water in agriculture are critical for successful implementation of a water saving society. It is not easy to save water, but Water User Associations (WUAs) are now widely regarded to play an important role in this. The way in which WUAs can help achieve water savings is, however, not fully understood. Furthermore, WUAs will only be effective in this if they are set up well on a participatory basis, and given good support.
